FIRST GENERATION

1.  Robert WELLES was born about 1516.  He was living from 2 Jun 1538 in Tenement in Galphay with all appurtenances.
Although already occupied by Robert, the property was leased (at 5
marks a year. 1mark=13s 4d,  5marks=3l 6s 8d ) for a further 45 years
on 2nd June 1538 (ie to 1583) by Abbot Marmaduke and the Convent of
Fonteyns (Fountains Abbey Lease Book, entry No 264).

On the 20th May 1553 (Calendar of Patent Rolls, HMSO printed in
English and copy in Latin with Vyner papers in Leeds) Granted to
George Talbot, knight, lord Talbot, of the manor and castle of
Balsover, Derb., six messuages in Craven, Yorkshire (inc. common of
pasture in Kyrkebye Maldesert Moor) in several tenures of Robert
Welles, John Maltehowse, Thomas Duffield, the elder, William Stele,
Thomas Duffield, the younger, and Thomas Braithwayte (3l 6s 8d each
per year), also two woods called Galghye Woode and Cowmyres (20s each
year) in tenure of William Mallerye, esquire, a thicket or coppice
called Skeugh in Galghye (3s each year) in tenure of Robert Wrekes and
the parcel (7ac.) of pasture and Wood in Clatherom (20s each year)
within Ripon Parish, in tenure of John Norton, esquire, all which
belonged to Fountains Monastry.

  He died in 1584/85 in Galphay.  He was buried in 1584/85 in Kirkby Malzeard, Yorks.  He signed a will on 11 Sep 1584 in Galwhaye (Galphay).  The will (in MP 36/1) is in the Leeds Archive Dept.  John Wells ails
Grante is bequeathed an  'annuytye from lande in Kirkbiemalzeard and
Laverton'.  He gives his grandson Ffrancis  'a cowe and one quye'.  A
quye is a heifer under 3 years of age.   Ffrancis Welles (his son
Thomas's son) and Katheryne, daughter to Ffrancis, are the executors
of the will. Probate dated 1585

SECOND GENERATION

2.  Thomas WELLS was born about 1539.  He was living from 2 Feb 1583 in Farmhold with appurtenances in Galphay.  The property was rented from Sir William Mallory of Hutton Park  He died in 1597 in Galphay.  He was buried in 1597 in Kirkby Malzeard, Yorks.  He signed a will on 4 Apr 1597 in Gawhay (Galphay).  In the will he leaves the rights to his farmhold to his grandson
Robert Wells, son of his son Robert.  He also gives to this grandson
'one coate of plate and one steele capp'.  His ganddaughter Ellen
Welles, sister of Robert, is bequethed a milk cow and two yewes. His
wife Ellen and grandson Thomas are the executors of the will.  The
will is in the Leeds Archive Dept.  There is a long inventory.
Associated papers refer to 'John Grant als Wells' showing a reversion
to Grant since the making of the will of Robert Welles.  He was a tenant farmer (husband[man]) in Galphay.

THIRD GENERATION

3.  Robert WELLS was born about 1576.  He died about 1644 in Galphay.  He was buried about 1644 in Kirkby Malzeard, Yorks.  He signed a will on 28 Dec 1644 in Gawhay (Galphay).  The will (in MP 36/2) is in the Leeds Archive Dept.  He leaves the
following:  To his son John Wells, 3 oxen, 1 white mare, 4 kyne, 1
javlin, 1 thwart bawe, 1 hacke, 1 speake (spoke of a wooden wheel)
shase and 4 iron wedges.  To his son Thomas Wells, 4 stotts (young
ox), 1 stirke (young cattle-any kind), 4 stript milke quies and 1 baye
horse.  To grandchild Isabell Wells, 1 quie stirke.  Dorathie, his
wife, and John Wells were the executors.  He was a Yeoman in Galphay, Yorks..

Dorathie  - died in 1651 in Cowmyers.  She was buried on 20 May 1651 in Ripon.  Children of Robert WELLS and Dorathie  - were:

4.  Ffrances WELLS was involved in a land deal in 1609 in Galphay.  A 1610/11  document refers to a 1609 deal involving half a close
called Little Inges for £20 from George Maltus of Galphay to Ffrances
Wells of Galphay.  Between 1592-1661 a document (77/1,1190-1205 Leeds Archives)  refers
to Galphay Mill and Mill Closes and, amongst others, mentions Francis
Wells.

FOURTH GENERATION

6.  William WELLS was born about 1600.  He died in 1670 in Galphay, Yorks..  He was buried in 1670 in Kirkby Malzeard, Yorks.  He signed a will on 10 Aug 1670 in Galphay, Yorks..  The will is in the Leeds Archive Dept.  His wife is to occupy his
house, where he dwells untill William, his eldest son, is 21.  His
wife is to have the old house and barn for the rest of her life, it is
then to pass to his younger son Nicholas.  There is a detailed
description of the layout of his property (inc. the North Garth, the
Colt Fall).  His daughters Dorothy, Elizabeth and Ruth are mentioned.
Henry Wells and George Marshall, his sons-in law, were the executors.  He was a Yeoman in Galwhay (Galphay).

7.  Thomas WELLS was born about 1600.  He signed a will on 14 Feb 1650 in Galphay.  He leaves £100 to his daughter Anne and her education and upbringing
is left to William and Mary Beckwith who are to receive £6-10s a year,
£3 to be taken from the profits of one close or meadow lying in dallow
carr called north close, and out of a fire house and barne standing
therein, and out of another close called bothom close. Anne to inherit
these lands and property on marriage or reaching 21 years.  He gives
to William and John Wells the west end of one fire house and 4 closes
of meadow and pasture ground with appurtenances called scuttscarr
lying west of the said firehouse in dallowgill within the possession
of William Beckwith which he had of the gift or grant of George
Braithwaite and John Brigge...etc.  He gives 5s to each child of his
uncle Frances; to Isabell, Anne and Dorothy,daughters of his brother
William, 10s to buy each a ewe; to daughter Anne,his brass pott, 4
puter dishes and two puter candlesticks; to his sisters, Jane and
Margaret, 20s each.  William and John Wells, his bretheren, are the
executors.
 

  The will (in MP 36/2) is in Leeds Archive Department.  He died in 1662 in Galphay, Yorks..  He was buried in 1662 in Kirkby Malzeard, Yorks.  He was a yeoman in Galphay.

  Children of Thomas WELLS and Anne BECKWITH were:

 29 i. Anne WELLS.

10.  John WELLS signed a will on 15 Dec 1684 in Galphay, Yorks..  To his wife Margarett he leaves all the cowpasture on the west side of
his house, together with the calfe garth; the lowest meadow close
called hebble close; half of his dwelling house and half his household
goods; all his moneys, bonds, specialtyes,and other writings
concerning any money owing to him; one tailed cow and his best steer;
2 little calves and 2 mares; half his hay and corn.... Robert Wells,
his son, is given all other unbequeathed housing, lands and
tennements.  Margarett is the sole executor.  Inventory also attached.
(Borthwick Institute,York)  He died in 1690 in Cowmyers.  He was a yeoman in Cowmyers, Galphay, Yorks.

  Children of John WELLS and Margaret were:

13.  Tristram WELLS died in 1676 in Galphay.  He was buried on 10 Dec 1676 in Kirkby Malzeard, Yorks.
There is no proof that Tristram is the son of Ffrances.

18 Dec 1675  William Steele y .....  confirm to Tristram Wells (snr or
jnr??) of Galphay husbandman one parcel of arable land containing 12
yards lying on a (headland?) the field belonging to the aforesaid and
called Nab fields .....and 2 lands called C...le...    belonging to
the said Tristram Wells on the north side of Nab fields.

18.  Christopher WELLS signed a will on 22 Mar 1657 in Cowmyers, Galphay, Yorks.  (Mss No. Prob Reg 45,  Folio 538r,  Order No. 6104. Borthwick
Institute, York, Yorks.).  To his younger son William Wells he leaves
the old ffire house, barn, garden and fould garth together with the
well pasture, corn close lying on the north of the said pasture, beck
close and the north carr as it was deinded at first and soe much of
the north pasture from the ditch of the said carr to the south east
corner of one close of arable ground called beck close, together with
the said beck close and alfe all the sowe meadowe closes from the head
of John Wells meadowes.  To his eldest son, Henry Wells, he leaves the
rest of his houseing and lands at Cow Myers.  His daughters, Dorothy
and  Mary Wells were the executors of the will.  The will was
processed 24 Feb 1663 (Commonwealth era delay). Ffrances as his 'now
wife' may not be the mother of all, or any, of his children.  He died on 22 Mar 1657/58 in Cowmyers, Galphay, Yorks.  He was buried on 26 Mar 1657/58.  He was a yeoman in Cowmyers, near Galphay.  On 25 Oct 1641 sale of Cowmyers and Randall Myers by William Mallory
of Studley to Ursula Roads for £465 in the occupation of Christopher
Wells of Cow Myers by Lease of £12 per annum.

13 April 1650,  Ffeoffment of Gaughay Miln and Milne closes or other
lands (77/1 1190-1205, 1592-1661 Leeds Archive) and indenture, Sir
Bryan Palmer of Lindley, York, Knight with Christopher and John Wells
of Cowmyers and others:
All that watercourse Milne called Gauygay Milne and all those closes
and parcels of ground sometimes called by the several names of the
Milne Closes, Cowmyers, Gauygay Woods and the farme are in divided
into many several closes situate and lying and beinge in Gauygay
aforesd and elsewhere in the - - - of Ripon and Kirkbymalzeard or
either of them in the countie of York and a parcel of pasture or wood
in Clitherom (Clotherholme) in the parishof Ripon containing 7 acres
of ground both farmes more or less sometimes in the occupation of John
Norton. All premisses were sometimes part of the possession of the
late dissolved Monastery of Fntns - - - -etc.  They paid £1,336.
William Wells is one of the witnesses (his mark).

Christopher is probably the brother of Tristram Wells snr (d.1676) son
of Ffrances Wells of Galphay Mill/Closes who in turn is the son of
Thomas Wells (d.1597).

FIFTH GENERATION

22.  Isabell WELLS died in 1719.  She was buried on 2 Apr 1719.

She was married to Henry WELLS about 1671.  Henry Wells was the eldest son of Christopher Wells of Cowmyers.  Henry WELLS was born in 1639 in Cowmyers, Galphay, Yorks.  He was baptized on 15 Oct 1639.  He signed a will on 9 Jul 1712 in Cowmyers, Galphay, Yorks.  (Borthwick Institute, York, Yorks).  To his younger sons Henry,
William and George Wells he leaves the old fire house, barn,garden and
ffould garth.  The close called the pasture,  one close called corn
close lying on the north of the said close called the pasture, one
close called the north carr as it was divided at the first and soe
much of the close called the north pasture from the ditch of the said
carr to the south east corner of one close of arrable land called beck
close together with the said close called beck close and alsoe all the
closes of meadow called the low meadow closes from the head of the
meadow grounds late of John Wells and now of Robert Wells.  Also the
little garth on the north side of the new ffire house (in which Henry
dwells) of about 8 x12 yards and extending eastwards between the two
houses together with the north end of an old barne carthouse or
slaught house.  John Wells the eldest son received the new ffire house
and all the remaining residue of lands and tenements at Cowmyers.  He died in 1716/17.  He was buried on 6 Jan 1716/17.  He was a yeoman in Cowmyers.  Children of Isabell WELLS and Henry WELLS were:

25.  Nicholas WELLS died in 1725 in Studley, Yorks.  He was buried on 26 Apr 1725.  (7-8 July 1715 Lease and release Nicholas Wells to John Aislabie a
burgage in Westgate, Ripon - 232/2 3584-3585)

He was married to Dorothy GRAYSON on 27 Apr 1685 in Ripon, Yorks.  Children of Nicholas WELLS and Dorothy GRAYSON were:

 48 i. Christopher WELLS was born in 1686.  He was baptized on 19 Sep 1686 in Ripon, Yorks.
 49 ii. Robert WELLS was born in 1701 in Studley, Yorks.  He was baptized on 7 Apr 1701 in Ripon, Yorks.  He died in 1720 in Studley, Yorks.  He was buried on 9 Sep 1720 in Ripon.
 +50 iii. William WELLS.
 51 iv. Mary WELLS was born in 1703 in Plumpton, Yorks.  She was baptized on 26 Sep 1703 in Ripon.
 52 v. Dorothy WELLS was born in 1698/99 in Studley, Yorks.  She was baptized on 10 Jan 1698/99 in Ripon.

31.  Robert WELLS signed a will on 17 Oct 1714 in Liverpool.  Will proved 1719 (Lancashire Record Office, Preston, ref WCW 1719.
Listed in Index of Wills 1701-1720 published by Lancashire & Cheshire
Record Society 1889, vol.20,p.215)

Leaves to eldest son John, his whole estate at Cowmires and the debt
that is on it.  John Wells ordered to pay second son Moses Wells £30
if it pleas God he returns to demand it. John also to pay £10 to the
eldest daughter of John Buck if she lives to the years of one and
twenty, if not it to be paid to the second daughter of John Buck.

To daughter Ann Wells the house he now dwells in in leverpoole
excepting the kitching and if she dye without heires the said house to
goe to his son Aron Wells and he to pay Moses Wells £30.

To his son Aron Wells he leaves the kitching above excepted and the
new house and stable ajoyning to it, his daughter Ann to have the
previlidge of the backside. Also to Ann all his houshold goods and his
two horses, making her his sole executor paying £30 to Ann Mercer.

  He died in 1718/19 in Liverpool.  He was a Yeoman in Liverpool.

  Children of Robert WELLS and Margaret were:

 54 i. John WELLS was born in 1687/88 in Cowmyers, Galphay, Yorks.  He was baptized on 29 Jan 1687/88 in Ripon, Yorks.  He was Indentured on 27 Apr 1711.  Indenture between Robert Wells and his son and heir John Wells of
   Cowmyers within the township of Galphay on the one part and Philip
   Sanders of Sutton Grange, yeoman, on the other. Regarding  low close
   of about 3 acres, lathe close of about 5 acres, one other close known
   as the islands of about 2 acres, and another close called the carr of
   about ten acres all at Cowmyers.  He died in 1768 in Kirkby Malzeard, Yorks.  He signed a will on 1 Feb 1768 in Kirkby Malzeard, Yorks.  In the Borthwick Institute, York.  Indexed as John Wells of Low
   Misses.  All his lands and houses at Cowmyers he leaves to William Kay
   eldest son of William Kay of NutwithCote his nephew.  To John Kay a
   younger son of William Kay of NutwithCote his nephew, he leaves all
   his lands at Azerley called Haverlands (mentioned in Fountains Abbey
   Lease Book entry No 185 dated 8 March 1467).  Others mentioned:
   nieces  Christiana Tayler (husband John Tayler)
              Beatrice Kay (Daughter of William Kay)
              Ann Powel (this is the maiden name) of Liverpool
              Ann Day (wife of William Day of Liverpool, Surgeon)
              Mary (and Richard) Harrison of Kirkby Malzeard to receive
   all his houses and lands in Kirkby Malzeard. William Harrison is her
   brother
   William Spence of Ripon
   William Launsdale
   Robert Raper
   Mathew Meek

   William Kay and John Kay are the executors.  He was buried on 17 Jul 1768 in Kirkby Malzeard, Yorks.  He was a Gentleman in Kirkby Malzeard, Yorks.  Late of Cowmyres.
 55 ii. Moses WELLS was born in 1691 in Cowmyers.  He was baptized on 13 Apr 1691 in Ripon.
 56 iii. Aaron WELLS was born in 1698 in Cowmyers, Galphay, Yorks.  He was baptized on 28 Nov 1698 in Ripon, Yorks.  He was a Labourer in 1751 in Liverpool.  He signed a will on 30 Nov 1751 in Liverpool.  Those mentioned:

   William, John, Mary, Christy & Beatrice, children of William Kay of
   Catterup, Co. York, husbandman.  Twenty shillings apiece.
   To said William Kay my wearing apparel.
   To William son of William Kay my German Harp.
   To my Godson John, son of William Robinson of Liverpool, Tabacconist,
   five shillings.
   To my brother John Wells and his wife, to each of them a Handkerchief.

   My nieces Margaret, Elizabeth, and Anne Lea, Daughters of my
   Brother.in.Law John Lea late of Liverpoole deceased, Woolen Draper.

   Ann powell daughter of Samuel Powell of the City of Chester, Ship
   Carpenter.

   (Margaret Lea, named sole executor died, granted instead to Ann Day,
   otherwise Lea, now the wife of William Day, Surgeon- niece to
   residuary legatee firstsworn dated 18 Jan 1768.)
  He died in 1768 in Liverpool.  A marriage is recorded of an Aaron Wells to Ann Mortas on 17th Dec 1735 at Pannal in Yorkshire. There were known Galphay family links with Pannal (George Wells of Pannell, linen weaver 1717 ) recorded in the Vyner deeds.
 57 iv. Robert WELLS was born in 1700/1 in Cowmyers, Galphay, Yorks.  He was baptized on 4 Feb 1700/1 in Ripon.  He died in 1703/4 in Cowmyers, Galphay, Yorks.  He was buried on 2 Mar 1703/4 in Ripon, Yorks.
 58 v. Anne WELLS was born in 1696 in Cowmyers, Galphay, Yorks.  She was baptized on 28 Jun 1696 in Ripon, Yorks.
 59 vi. Mary WELLS was born in 1693 in Cowmyers, Galphay, Yorks.  She was baptized on 26 Dec 1693 in Ripon, Yorks.

32.  Tristram WELLS.

Children of Tristram WELLS were:

 +60 i. William WELLS.

33.  Thomas WELLS signed a will on 14 Feb 1709 in Misses.  Will proved 1712 (Leeds Archive MP will).

To his now wife Ellin Wells his house and barn in Gallwhay and the two
halfe acres of land thereunto belonging rights and apurtenances for
the tearme of her naturall life. Thereafter, the said land and the
west end of the said house called the Barne End unto John Wilkinson
son of John Wilkinson late of Tanfield his grandson by marage.

To William Wells his nephew after the decease of the said Ellin, the
East End being the Dwelling End of the said House and the one halfe of
one garth or garden with its rights and apurtenence. The Barn End of
ther said house, and the two half acres aforesaid he gives to John
Wilkinson his grandson. His wife is sole executor.

If John Wilkinson dye before he attaine the age of one and twenty
years then he gives the land, barn and garth to the said William
Wells, George Wells and John Fell equally.  He died in 1711 in Misses.  He was a Yeoman in Misses.

He was married to Hellin WILKINSON on 14 May 1683 in Kirkby Malzeard, Yorks.  Thomas WELLS and Hellin WILKINSON had no known children.
 

34.  Henry WELLS was born in 1639 in Cowmyers, Galphay, Yorks.  He was baptized on 15 Oct 1639.  He signed a will on 9 Jul 1712 in Cowmyers, Galphay, Yorks.  (Borthwick Institute, York, Yorks).  To his younger sons Henry,

He was married to Isabell WELLS about 1671.  Henry Wells was the eldest son of Christopher Wells of Cowmyers.  Isabell WELLS died in 1719.  She was buried on 2 Apr 1719.  Children of Henry WELLS and Isabell WELLS were:

37.  Mary WELLS was born about 1652.  She was in a Court Document (Vyner 65/3) about 1675.  After death of Christoper Wells his wife Married Charles Richmond.
Court case between them and daughter Mary (nee Wells) Anderson and
Husband Richard regarding premisses left to now deceased William Wells
son of Christopher

She was married to Richard ANDERSON in 1673 in Ripon or Alne.  Richard ANDERSON was born about 1643.  He resided in St. Georges, Aldwark.  Mary WELLS and Richard ANDERSON had no known children.

SIXTH GENERATION

40.  William WELLS was born in 1680.  He was baptized on 26 Sep 1680.  He died in 1728.  He signed a will on 22 Jun 1728 in Azerley, Nr. Galphay, Yorks.  (Leeds Archive Department).  His wife Elizabeth (sole executor) is
left all his personal estate and lands.  Steven, his eldest son, is
left all his lands at Cowmyers when he attains the age of twenty one.
He refers to John Wells his brother-in-law, and John Wells of Melmerby

other appurtenances and land in Grewelthorpe (occupied by Christopher
Harrison) is left to his so Stephen.  His son, John, is sole executor
